Cameroon officially launched activities for the 140th edition of International Workers’ Day on Sunday, April 26, 2026, in a ceremony led by the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Grégoire Owona. The launch took place at the 20th May Boulevard in Yaoundé and began with a workers’ sports march. However, the main events of the celebration have not yet taken place and are scheduled for the coming days. The 2026 theme focuses on social dialogue and the promotion of decent work, according to officials.
Upcoming activities
Several activities are planned between the launch ceremony and the final parade. From Monday, April 27, to Wednesday, April 29, the 5th edition of WORKUP Cameroon will be held at the Yaoundé City Hall and the Djeuga Palace, under the high patronage of Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute.
The event includes a Workers’ Fair and the Grand Employment Marketplace, supported by the National Employment Fund. Organizers aim to connect 12,000 young job seekers with recruiters from public and private companies. International delegations from Switzerland, Canada, the United States, and Germany are expected to attend.
On Wednesday evening, April 29, a gala called the Great Night of Workers will recognize outstanding employees. Prizes include land titles, laptops, and cash awards of up to 250,000 FCFA. The celebrations will culminate on Friday, May 1, with the traditional workers’ parade on the Boulevard du 20 mai in Yaoundé. Workers and union representatives from across the country are expected to attend.
