The Republic of Cameroon laid former Senate President Marcel Niat Njifenji to rest on Saturday, May 16, 2026, in his native Bangangté. The burial closed three days of national mourning for the man who served as the nation’s second-highest personality for 13 years. The final journey began on Friday, May 15, when his remains left Yaoundé.

This followed an emotionally charged Thursday in the capital. Prime Minister Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute, Minister of State Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, and parliamentary leaders Aboubakary Abdoulaye and Théodore Datouo led institutional tributes at the Yaoundé General Hospital. The Congress Palace then hosted a solemn parliamentary homage and a religious service rich with testimonies to his wisdom and unwavering fidelity to the Republic. An overnight vigil allowed the political family and citizens to pay their last respects.

On Friday evening, the procession arrived in the Mandja neighbourhood of Bangangté, where family and community members held a deeply traditional wake. Saturday’s grand burial ceremony sealed his definitive return to his ancestral land. Throughout the ceremonies, Marcel Niat Njifenji was celebrated as a pillar of institutional stability and a sage whose decades of loyal service leave an indelible mark on Cameroon’s political history.
